This lecture will explore the professional career of second generation abstract expressionist artist Joseph Stapleton (1921-1994). Stapleton studied at the League with Will Barnet and Morris Kantor and later taught at Pratt and the League. His work integrated his skill as a draftsman with the gestural painting techniques of Abstract Expressionism. Solomon brings to the discussion his own personal recollections of Stapleton as both his Pratt instructor and mentor.
Robert Solomon is a Boston-based artist and art historian (MFA 2016 Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts, BFA 1974 Pratt Institute), whose research focuses on mid-twentieth century American art history. He is currently writing a book on Stapleton.
