Panel Discussion: 57th Street Capital of the Art World

In celebration of the Art Students League’s 125th year on 57th Street, this panel discussion will explore the architectural and cultural history of the neighborhood and its importance as a center of the New York gallery scene.

Matt Postal, an architectural historian and licensed New York City tour guide, teaches graduate classes on the history of New York City and its extraordinary 19th and 20th century architecture. He also researches and writes designation reports for the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Since 1990, he has lead popular and entertaining walking talks throughout the five extraordinary boroughs of New York City.

Joan Washburn began her career in the art world in 1951 at Kraushaar Gallery. In 1971 she founded her eponymous gallery, which was an anchor of the midtown art scene for forty years. Washburn Gallery relocated to Chelsea in August 2017.
