Including the Process for Accessing Your Locker
Dear League Community,
We’re sorry to share the news that The League’s building will remain closed for classes through December 2020. President Robin Frank and the Board of Control announced the news at the Members Town Hall Meeting last night. There will be no public exhibitions or programming at The League during this time. Exhibitions will be held virtually whenever possible This decision was made out of concern for the well-being and safety of our students, instructors and staff.
The good news is that all the popular online classes with League instructors that have already attracted thousands of students, many from outside New York, will continue and will be expanded in the coming months.

The League was Flooded Last Week in Tropical Storm Fay
We Hope to Open in January

Last night President Frank explained:
“We were planning an opening for September, but unfortunately Mother Nature interfered with our plans. Last Friday, during the extremely violent rainstorm, The League’s building experienced water damage. We are extremely lucky that the studios experienced only minor damage. The upgrades on the first floor to the bathrooms and office area experienced no damage. The exhibition on the first floor with our collection was also spared.
The fourth floor hallway, cafeteria, etching and litho room floors and the gallery were affected the most, but the presses are okay. Thanks to our facilities manager Kenneth David and the maintenance staff for their extraordinary effort. They managed to minimize the damage, which could have been a lot more extensive. In conclusion, we will need to move the re-opening of the school until January 2021.”
Robin also said that during this time The League would be evaluating and seeking to upgrade our ventilation systems.
The Process for Accessing Your Locker
Thanks to everyone for their patience during this long period when you have not had access to your locker or any artwork at The League. As with reopening, our plan for locker access has been affected by the recent flood.
If you want to come to The League to access your locker and any artwork please email [email protected]and we can arrange an appointment for you to come in. Please be aware this will be a slow process because of limited administrative staffing at 57th Street. Please continue to be patient. Priority will be given to students who were taking classes prior the closing and have artwork to retrieve.
You will be escorted in the school.  Some areas of the school may not yet be accessible for students. You will need to wear a mask. Social distancing and other COVID safety protocols will be in place. You will have to answer a series of questions about your recent health in order to be admitted to the building. These are common protocols that businesses and organizations are employing as New York continues its phased re-opening.
You do NOT have to empty your locker. Locker fees continue to be suspended.
Finance Report 
Committee Chair Beth Berns told members that the Finance and the Investment Advisory Committees were meeting regularly to monitor The League’s financial condition.  Beth informed the membership that all staff and instructors were compensated from March through the end of June even if the building closure meant that they were not able to work. The League was successful in getting a federal Payroll Protection Plan loan/grant to bridge some of its immediate cash flow issues, Beth reported.
Concours and Gallery 
President Frank reported on various recent and upcoming exhibitions. “Sixty-one classes were represented in our Virtual Concours with 571 pieces of artwork.
“All in-person exhibitions and public programs will be on hold until January 2021. We will resume a robust season of public programs and gallery exhibitions virtually. This includes the Instructor Exhibition and the Grant Winners. Extra promotion will hopefully bring the attention these shows deserve.
“The exhibition Creating Community, Cinque Gallery Artists has been moved to May of 2021. We have pushed back the date to increase accessibility/viewership and funding opportunities. The Romare Bearden Foundation will be a cultural partner.”

The Board has launched its search for a new Artistic/Executive Director. Vice President Charlotte Bialek explained what The League was looking for in a new director. The job description is available on the League’s website:
In response to a member question, Board Member Michael Jacobs stressed the importance of improving diversity at The League. He said The League is forming a committee to improve our performance in hiring, Board and student recruitment across multiple areas: BIPOC, LGBTQ+, gender, et al. This committee (composed of Board members, staff, instructors and members/students) will set the priorities and goals tailored to the unique needs of The League as a collective effort.  He described a few of the efforts that The League is already taking to support the goals of Black Lives Matter, including examining the ownership of funds in which The League invests and Summer in the City, which serves vulnerable NYC public school youth ( Michael said achieving these goals would be crucial to our success at pursuing funding opportunities and remaining relevant to the NY Cultural conversation.  He is looking for help and support for this initiative and may be emailed at [email protected].
President Frank gave thanks for the more than 580 gifts that have come into “The League Responds” fund. You can donate to the fund here.
The next virtual Town Hall for Members is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28 at 6:00 pm. The meeting will discuss proposed Constitutional Bylaw amendments to be considered at the August 12 virtual Members Meeting.  The proposals are available here:, and the full Constitution can be accessed here:

Your Health

As you know, The League has been keeping you updated with health and program information related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and The League’s responsive measures. It remains our top priority to keep our students, members, staff, visitors and instructors safe and healthy.

To assist in that effort, we are asking you to please let us know of any contact or possible contact you might have had with the Coronavirus. Your identity and information will be kept confidential.

To help us keep you and our community safe, please e-mail The League’s Human Resources Department at [email protected] to let us know IF:

  • You have been diagnosed with COVID-19,
  • You have had contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19; or
  • You, or someone with whom you’ve had close contact, has recently traveled to a country that the Centers for Disease Control has identified as having a risk of Level 2 or higher (China, Iran, Italy, South Korea or Japan).

If you meet these criteria, or if you feel ill or develop any symptoms consistent with coronavirus such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath, please do not come to The League and follow the recommendations of the CDC. Click here to read the CDC’s recommendations.

Any information you report to us, which will be kept confidential, will help The League make decisions in the best interests of all our students, members, staff, visitors and instructors.

Please note that, to date, The League is not aware of any COVID-19 cases in our community and are taking these proactive steps in a best effort to protect you all.


• If the school is closed, will I be able to get my things from my locker?

The League building will be open limited hours Thursday, March 12 through Saturday March 14 only for students and members who wish to pick up materials from their studio or locker. After that, there will be no public access to the building until classes resume.

The hours for pick up are:

  • Thursday 9:00am to 7:00 pm
  • Friday 9:00am to 7:00pm
  • Saturday 9:00am to 4:00pm

• Will I receive tuition credit or reimbursement for missed classes and/or workshops?
When The League is reopened, students will be credited for any missed classes or workshops.

• How will I be notified if there are confirmed cases at The League?
The League will email its community as soon as any information regarding the above is known. Please check your email regularly regarding status updates.

• How do I join The League’s email list?
If you do not receive email from us, please (re)subscribe via this link: prevent missing an email, please also add [email protected] and The Art Students League of New York to your email address book, and check your spam/trash folders.

• What about upcoming gallery events — like lectures and the class concours opening receptions?
All public gatherings, including gallery lectures and exhibition receptions, have been postponed until further notice. Please visit our Events page to see the most updated information regarding gallery events.

• What is The League doing to help keep us safe from the Coronavirus?
The League is staying up-to-date on the development of the virus. As of now, there are no confirmed cases at The League.
