Drawing and Painting from Life: Self Portraiture & Portfolio Development (Ages 14-18) ( Online)

Wendy Shalen

Wendy Shalen, At Work, watercolor, 31 x 23 inches

Class Description

This is a class for artists wanting to strengthen and clarify their drawing skills and their portfolios for college, high school and grad school admission.* It will also be helpful for adults hoping to improve their drawing, watercolor and pastel painting skills. We will progress first monochromatically from line, to line & tone, to all tone, using graphite, charcoal, silverpoint, pen and ink, and then work in a limited and full color palette in black and white charcoal and red sanguine and in watercolor, pastel and/or water-based monotype. More advanced students can concentrate in the medium of their choice. Compositional thumbnails, capturing one’s personal reactions and feelings, and imaginative individual approaches are encouraged. Portfolio reviews, presentation and digital photographing and uploading to Slideroom will be included.
*Please note that students younger than 14 years of age must send the instructor 3-5 images of their strongest work prior to registering. Please email your images to [email protected].

About the Instructor

“One of my principal goals as an artist is to capture and communicate intuitive responses to a subject, carefully and sensitively, whether I am working from a model, landscape, or still life. Successful work conveys not only the reality that the artist confronts but the very personal reaction that is inspired by that reality.”

Wendy Shalen has taught figure and landscape drawing and painting to adults and teens for more than thirty years. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Brandeis University, where she majored in art history. She also studied at The Art Students League in the late 1970s with Daniel Greene, Harvey Dinnerstein, and Robert Beverly Hale, and privately with Burton Silverman.

She has exhibited at Allan Stone Gallery (New York City); Abbot & Holder (London); Carol Craven Gallery and Gardner Colby Gallery (Martha’s Vineyard); the Katonah Museum of Art (Katonah, NY); the Housatonic Museum (Bridgeport, CT); and the Belskie Museum (Closter, NJ). Ms. Shalen has taught a Portfolio Development Drawing class for high school students, as well as landscape painting workshops for adults, at the Silvermine Guild School of Art in New Canaan, Connecticut, and at the Vytlacil Campus of The Art Students League. She is currently a member of The Prince Street Gallery in Manhattan. Her studio is located in Waccabuc, New York.
