The Art Students League of New York frequently hosts events, including artist talks, seminars and lectures, which bring together current students, members, alumni, instructors and other members of the art community.
Artist Talk: Silya Kiese
September 10, 2008, 7:00 p.m.
Location: Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery (second floor)
Silya Kiese, League instructor in "Sculpture and Process," will lecture on her work in the Instructors' Exhibition, Golden Square.
Lecture: What Every Artist Needs to Know
September 16, 2008, 7:00 p.m.
Lecturer: Anki King, Artist
Location: Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery (second floor) This lecture will focus on basic information regarding art materials for painters: brushes, oil paint and mediums, acrylic paint and painting surfaces. Artist Anki King will also demonstrate stretching a canvas and discuss artwork reproduction and use of the internet. Ms. King received most of her art education in her native country of Norway but has also studied extensively at the Art Students League. She has been painting for more than twenty years and exhibits frequently in Norway and the U.S. Her work has been exhibited at the Katonah Museum of Art, Karpeles Library Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art-Tokyo and Las Cruces Museum of Art in New Mexico and is included in several collections including the Appleton Museum of Fine Art. She has taught at Sessions.edu and Nurtureart.
Lecture: The Basics for Artists, Part 1--Preparing Your Work for Exhibits

The first part of a three-part series, Leah McCloskey looks at the process of preparing work for exhibitions, including: photographing, matting, framing, display, packing and shipping.
An Evening of Art + Music

Spontaneous performances by musicians and visual artists.

What does the color blue sound like? What does C sharp look like? Watch as musicians and artists respond to each other's expressions and explore the synaesthesia of image and sound. Participants: Artists: Grace Knowlton, Tony Martin and G.L. Sussman. Musicians: Mark Lopeman, Tom Artin, Bob Stewart, Greg Cohen and Steve Cohn.
Lecture: The Basics for Artists, Part 2--Pricing Your Work

In part two of this three-part series, students learn how to price their artwork. Topics include: time and materials, market research, gallery commissions, tax ID and sales tax.
Artist Talk: Eric Drooker
October 23, 7:00 p.m.
Location: Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery (second floor)
Painter, illustrator and graphic novelist, Eric Drooker will discuss his career in a slide talk. Mr. Drooker's work has appeared in left-wing magazines and on several New Yorker covers. His Flood! A Novel in Pictures--focusing on powerless citizens' challenges to authority--won an American Book Award. Mr. Drooker's work is included in the Leauge's October exhibit, Art From Anxious Times.
