The Art Students League of New York

Off-Campus Studio Art Programs in
New York City for College Students

Flexible, Affordable Partnerships in Higher Education
New York City is a great place to study art. The Art Students League of New York, founded by artists for artists, has been training many of most prominent figures in American art for 135 years.

Today, the League offers accredited institutions flexible and affordable partnership programs to immerse students in studio practices, surround them with supportive instructors and students, engage them in the artistic life of New York City, and launch them toward new artistic achievements.

The League hosts programs at our landmark campus on 57th Street in Manhattan and at our bucolic Vytlacil Campus in the lower Hudson Valley, just 30 minutes outside the city.

Programs for Colleges and Their Students
The Art Students League works with colleges and universities to create “student mobility programs” in which art students study in League programs and receive credit at their college. A typical 15-credit course of study might involve a student taking one five-day-a-week, half-day advanced painting class for 17 weeks (318 contact hours), and one two-day-a-week intermediate sculpture class (127 contact hours). Month-long residencies, workshops in Florence, Italy, and multi-month apprenticeships are also available.

The Art Students League will work with your institution to design programs that meet your students’ needs. Our historical commitment to affordable tuition benefits both our college partners and their students.

These are our primary New York programs for matriculated students:

Intensive Studio Programs
The League’s atelier instruction allows individuals to learn at their own pace from prominent artists— who represent a range of artistic philosophies and approaches—and from fellow students. Classes are available at all levels in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media.

Residency Programs
The Art Students League’s Vytlacil Campus Artist-in-Residence is a competitive program for emerging, professional, and teaching visual artists. This unique residency allows artists to access the resources of the 15-acre wooded campus, which include advanced classes in painting and sculpture—including welding, bronze casting and metal forging—while having the solitude of their studio space to work on individual projects, and the chance to confer with League faculty and their fellow residents.  A shuttle van is available to take residents to New York City, 30 minutes away.  For more information, go to Residencies.

Workshops in Florence
The Art Student League also offers workshops in Florence, Italy—two week workshops held in early May at Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in the heart of the city, are led by League instructors who combine the artistic history of Florence with museum tours and lectures, and intensive instruction both in the local landscape and in the studio. In 2010, workshops will be held in Florence from April 23 to May 8th.

Facilities
The Art Students League of New York 57th Street Campus, just two blocks from Central Park, is a national historic registry building designed by Henry J. Hardenberg (who also designed the Plaza Hotel and the Dakota apartments) and opened in 1892. The campus provides:

The League’s Vytlacil Campus is set on 15 wooded acres outside the Lower Hudson River Valley hamlet of Sparkill, New York. The property was the gift of the family of American modernist painter Vaclav Vytlacil. The Artist-in-Residency Program’s facilities and activities include:

• Individual studio space
• Private bedrooms with shared bath
• Ongoing painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, welding and forging classes

Students committed to pursuing a degree in studio art can greatly benefit from participating in the League’s programs. Partnerships with the Art Student League of New York give students the opportunity to study and grow in New York within a supportive community of prominent artist-instructors and talented students.
