Watercolor: The Painter's Approach

Timothy J. Clarkäs class will focus on using the medium as a mature, expressive
means. The language of painting that has traditionally been taught in oil and other media
will be translated into this modern, portable, popular medium, thereby taking watercolor
into a more formidable area of solid painting. Subject matter will include the figure, still
life and landscape, with an overriding emphasis on the relationship of technique to
composition, color theory and expression.
Mr. Clarkäs work is represented by Hammer Galleries in New York City. His
watercolor portrait of Will Barnet was acquired for the permanent collection of the
Smithsonianäs National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and his work is included in
the permanent collections of, among others, the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland,
Maine, the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri and the El Paso Museum in Texas. His
drawings of the smoldering ruins of Ground Zero were acquired by the Museum of the
City of New York.
In 2000, Mr. Clark received the William A. Paton Award at the National
Academyäs 75th Exhibition; in 2003, he received the Presidentäs Award in the National
Arts Clubäs annual membersä exhibition, and, in 2004, he received the Salzman Award at
the Clubäs exhibition.
Mr. Clark has written for various art magazines, including Watercolor (ÜWinslow
Homeräs Watercolor Techniques,¹ fall 1998) and American Artist, and he is author of the
book Focus on Watercolor (Watson-Guptill, 1987). He has taught at the National
Academy School in New York City, the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester,
Massachusetts and at Yale Universityäs School of Architectureäs graduate program in
Rome, Italy.
A graduate of the Chouinard Art Institute and the California Institute of the Arts,
Mr. Clark has studios in New York City; West Bath, Maine; and Capistrano Beach,
California.
