Richard Pantell
Printmaking: Etching, Drypoint, Mezzotint, Linoleum and Woodcut, Monotype, etc.

A few years ago, Richard Pantell decided to make his home in Woodstock where, in his youth, he sang folk songs, strummed his guitar, and joined in with the chorus protesting the war and demanding civil rights for all. But as the saying goes, paraphrased slightly, ÜYou can take the boy out of the city, but you canät take the city out of the boy.¹ That city is New York, and New York is what Mr. Pantelläs works are mostly about. Its streets, bridges, people and subways are captured in his emotionally charged work, filled with the cityäs moods, atmosphere and feelings which go beyond mere visualization, evoking the cacophony of its sounds and underlying music.

This love affair with New York began in the Bronx in 1951 and has remained with him as he honed his skills in almost every art medium at the University of Bridgeport and the Art Students League. The proof of these skills can be viewed in many public collections, including the Butler Institute of American Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the British Museum, to name a few.

The one medium he finds most gratifying is printmaking. Adding to that gratification is his ability to take the mystery out of the medium. Understanding the studentäs doubts and fears regarding the technical aspects of printmaking, he has the ability to quickly dispel them. In short order, confidence replaces apprehension, as he encourages the student to experiment with the medium and learn to master the complexities of the art. The choice of whether the work should be complex or simple, or what the content should be, is left to the individual. Mr. Pantell strongly believes that content determines the quality of the piece and that, while the medium is not necessarily the message, he will help you develop the skills to handle it.

The atmosphere of the studio is upbeat and lively and, like Mr. Pantell, filled with good humor. In fact, every once in a while he entertains the class with his guitar. After all, "You can take the boy out of Woodstock, but..."
