Maurizio Pellegrin
Painting and Mixed Media

This studio course is based on the investigation of different techniques and processes of art and is intended for artists who are interested in producing work using a wide variety of media. Through the development of the capacity to observe, and with the help of criticism, art history and the understanding of the varied aspects of different cultures in different ages, students will be guided in the use of different materials, mediums, surfaces and tools in their creative process. Conceptual thinking will be honed by balancing studio practice with individual and group projects. An important component of the class will be preparation of work for exhibition – real or virtual – dealing with technical problems and curatorial issues in a professional context.

The range of the course will encompass the study of materials, surfaces, techniques, art history, philosophy, architecture and design. Painting, video, photography, mixed media, and restoration will be considered with the help of theoretical and demonstrative lessons. Special attention will be dedicated to the concept of Space: Real Space, Virtual Space, Physical Space, Spiritual Space, Interior and Exterior Space. A dialogue on the relation of contemporary art with the presence of historical objects and art in specific sites will also be conducted.
