With the “Great Recession” now in its second year, please accept my special thank you for the continuing support that the Art Students League of New York has received from you. The difficult economy has truly tested our inventiveness and resolve, but we have been remarkably productive due to your generosity and belief in the League.
The resources to turn creative inspiration into exciting exhibitions and catalogs, to support aspiring and emerging artists, and to help us produce our publicationsLinea and Lines from the Leaguecome from you. Thank you.
This year, I am gratified to report that we were able to raise more than 25% of the funds needed to conserve and mount Drawing Lessons: Academic Drawings from the Permanent Collection of the Art Students League of New York. Additionally, contributions to the Exhibition Outreach program offset much of the $14,000 cost of participating in the Affordable Art Fair, where the League was one of very few schools granted the privilege to exhibit with national and international galleries.
The League will continue to present museum-quality exhibitions. Why the Nude, Out There, and Art from Anxious Times challenged viewers to think about a wide array of contemporary art issues, and this year’s Drawings Lessons helped students and the public understand the origins of the League and its training practices. These exhibitions celebrated the work of highly influential artists as well as students of some of the League’s most legendary instructors, including Kenyon Cox, H.S. Mowbray, Frank Vincent Dumond, and George Bridgman. With your help, we will continue to extend the network of Exhibition Outreach venues so that the work of our current students can adorn more building lobbies, restaurants, libraries, and municipal and corporate offices throughout the tri-state area.
The next 12 months are shaping up to be exciting ones, with goals that include: a larger booth and presence for Exhibition Outreach at the Affordable Art Fair; a growing reciprocal partnership with Laguna College of Art and Design that will allow students to earn credit for classes taken at the League; a fall 2010 retrospective exhibition of Will Barnet’s work; and the anticipated broadcast of a profile on the League currently being produced by PBS.
This year, the League’s annual appeal is funding three specific programs:
• Gallery Exhibitions
• The League’s journal LINEA
• Exhibition Outreach Program.
You can also earmark your gift for one of those specific causes or to support the League’s General Operations by clicking on “Please specify any gift instructions” on the “please review your donation” Pay Pal screen.
The board, staff, and I gratefully acknowledge your crucial role in the success of the League’s on-going mission and in this past year’s accomplishments. Please give generously and know that every gift, large or small, is truly appreciated. We cannot thank you enough.

As a not-for-profit institution, donations are critical to our future. Donations support our tradition of offering the finest quality art education at an affordable cost and help maintain and improve the facilities at our landmark building in Manhattan and at our Vytlacil campus and Artist-in-Residency Program in the Hudson River Valley just outside the city.
We thank our donors for their dedication and loyalty to the League, and look forward to working with new League friends as we shape the future of our great institution.
