Located in historic Sparkill, New York, the Vytlacil Campus is an integral part of the Art Students League. It provides education and support to working artists in the studio-based, atelier tradition and to experiment and explore different areas of art making in its spacious and pastoral setting. The campus is a meeting place, forum and residency for outstanding students and practicing artists from around the world.

The Art Students League's Vytlacil Campus in Rockland County is the home of the Vytlacil Campus Artist-in-Residence Program and the site of ongoing critiques and workshops.
The League received the generous gifts of property and funding for the campus in 1995
from the family of the late artist and League instructor Vaclav Vytlacil.
The Vyt AIR Program: Focus on the Creative Process
"Creating an appropriate environment is at the core of the Vytlacil Artist-in-Residence program: one that provides camaraderie and understanding of the complexities and implications of art making. Along with instruction and critiques, our residents experience encouragement, guidance, and sustenance, enabling creativity."
—Gary Lawrence Sussman, Instructor and Director, Vytlacil Campus

The Vytlacil Campus Artist-in-Residence Program (Vyt AIR) provides an environment that frees artists from the routine of daily life and allows them to truly focus on their art for an extended period of time. It offers living and studio space, equipment, and access to New York City classes, and one-on-one mentoring in a wooded setting just 30 minutes from the cultural center of New York City. Click here for application information.
Vyt AIR is supported by grants from the Sara and Yasuo Kuniyoshi Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts (2011), and the Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation. It is competitive and open to professional, emerging, and teaching artists from the U.S. and abroad.
Core support to resident-artists includes:
- a single bedroom for four- or eight-week residencies with a communal catered lunch provided weekly
- 24/7 access to private and shared studio space
- use of specialized equipment such as the bronze furnace, kiln, forging, and welding studio
- access to our facilities including an extensive art library, Wi-Fi internet, and reading room
- mentoring & critiques by professional, working artists-instructors
- "Vyt Van" and public transportation access to NYC cultural institutions and networking opportunities
Local Exposure, An International Experience
Since its opening in mid-2007, Vyt AIR has hosted resident artists ranging in age from twenty to eighty, and from homes throughout the United States and abroad. In fact, Vyt has hosted 39 international artists from 17 different nations: Australia, Canada, England, Germany, France, Japan, India, Ireland, Norway, Scotland, South Africa, and Thailand, to name a few.
Artists are given individual space to freely focus on their craft, as well as ample opportunity to engage with the supportive community of artists that embodies the spirit of Vyt AIR—including communal sunset gatherings and impromptu evening presentations. At the end of their residency, artists may participate in “Open Studio” sessions, a chance to share their work with the League’s extensive community and the public.
